30 Years on Set, 21 Teaching Film School
Alan McIntyre writes WTF-Stop because he loves how films are made and likes to delve into the details of how art works, creating an emotional change within the viewer. This newsletter builds on his years of set work, teaching, and analysis, working with students at SUNY, Purchase College, Rutgers University, and Rider University.
He worked his way up the indie film ladder from production assistant to Gaffer to cinematographer and director, working on films such as Happiness, The Station Agent, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, A VIGILANTE, Martin Scorsese Presents: The Blues, and many others. You won’t find him in the credits, but he also worked many days as an additional electric on The Royal Tenenbaums, A Beautiful Mind, and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man.
But the union wouldn’t vote me in, so I write my Substack…
After decades on set, Alan got a chance to direct a feature film, Stargazer, which played a dozen film festivals, winning awards for acting, cinematography, editing, music, and directing. It was released in 2024 and is available to rent on Apple, Amazon, YouTube, Google Play. Or watch for free with ads on PLEX.
Alan is currently developing narrative projects and directing documentaries and music videos, and continues to shoot projects as a cinematographer. His website: alanfilmmaker.com
