HOW I SHOOT Episode 001: David Bush
Script Supervisor, Writer, Director
I met David Bush last fall, working on the film MOTION in New Orleans. He was the script supervisor on the project, but as we got to know each other between takes, I discovered that he had many more layers to his career than he initially let on.
David also works as a writer and director and started his career as a production assistant and assistant director. In this conversation, we dive into what it takes to start a career in the film business, different strategies to pursue, and how to play the long game, ending with a heartfelt tribute to Rob Reiner, whom David was lucky enough to work with on Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.

Here are some trailers for David’s recent projects as a writer/director and script supervisor.
Two recent script supervisor jobs - Spinal Tap 2 and Five Nights at Freddy’s:
David directed PHONY in 2022. You can watch it on TUBI and other streaming platforms.
We talked about how David was able to parlay existing relationships with producers into writing and directing several features in the post-COVID morass. Half Lives involves an unreliable narrator, so he employed his continuity expertise to create deliberate breaks in continuity logic throughout the film which helped create a feeling of unravelling reality.
